Onigirazu おにぎらず is a “sandwich” derived from the onigiri and the maki. Inside are many ingredients such as vegetables, fried chicken, fish, meat… surrounded by Japanese rice and also a large sheet of nori.
The onigirazu is very popular in Japan and is eaten especially in bento. It is a quite complete and hearty meal.
Onigiri and maki, variations
1 Onigiri おにぎり meaning rice ball in Japanese is a very popular food in Japan. You will find many different types of onigiri such as those with umeboshi (Japanese plum), with katsuobushi (dried bonito), seaweed konbu … Theonigiri is shaped like a triangle and the rice is compressed enough to fit in the hand. It is not considered a dish but rather a snack and you can easily find it in Japanese supermarkets and kombini.
2 The maki 巻き as for him is a Japanese rice roll surrounded by a sheet of nori and in which is raw fish, vegetables etc… The maki is quite small and is held with Japanese chopsticks.
