Kare raisu, a common dish in Japan
Curry was introduced to Japan in the 1900s and was quickly adapted into Japanese dishes. The most popular: kare raisu カ レーライス (curry and rice) is a dish consisting of meat and vegetables mixed with a curry sauce located on the left side of the plate and the other a piece of white rice located on the right. Presented in a plate, this dish is eaten with a big spoon.Very popular, it is eaten in restaurants as well as in Japanese homes and is very represented in manga. Sometimes you will find curry sauce presented separately but usually this sauce is already in the dish. The Japanese curry sauce is much sweeter and thicker than the Indian one.
The ingredients of a kare raisu
Vegetables: Carrots, onions and potatoes generally but other vegetables can be used depending on the recipe and the season. Meat: Pork, beef or chicken, depending on the region, each one has its own speciality.
The curry sauce is very long to prepare and usually the Japanese use a pre-made sauce, the most famous is the Golden Curry brand from S&B. You have mild, medium and strong ones according to your taste. You just have to dilute it with boiling water.
Kare raisu is a very popular dish in Japan because it is very quick to make at home with these ready-made mixtures in supermarkets.
Side dishes
Kare raisu is often accompanied by a simple green water to soften the spicy taste of the dish and tsukemono (vegetables marinated in salt, vinegar or miso paste or soy sauce) such as:
Fukujinzuke 福神漬 one of the most popular, it can be recognized by its red color and contains daikon , eggplant, ginger, lotus flower and cucumber. The whole thing is marinated in soy sauce and sugar.
