Oyakodon 親子丼 is part of the donburi family, that is, a large bowl of rice on which are ingredients, here among others are eggs, pieces of chicken, onions, the negi and mirin and sake, shoyu soy sauce and dashi (depending on the recipe, this may vary). Oyakodon means “parents and child in a bowl”, the parents are represented by the chicken and the child by the eggs. It is a typical Japanese dish, easily made, simple and delicious. The chicken and onions are cooked in a dashi-based sauce, a sauce rich in umami. This makes it tender and tasty, and on top of it are scrambled eggs. The whole thing is placed on a large bowl of hot rice.
